A small, enthusiastic project group under the auspices of the University of Helsinki initiated the unique project, whose prime mover was Assistant Professor Hannu I. Miettinen. The first milestones in content development were pilot exhibitions in which science-centre working practices were devised. In the early days, financial arrangements and the participation of companies, organisations, the Finnish government and, finally, the City of Vantaa were the deciding factors. The external appearance of the Science Centre arose as the result of an architectural competition. The internationally famous, futuristic Heureka building gave its name to the entire institute.

The Heureka Science Centre’s activities are the responsibility of the Finnish Science Centre Foundation, which is a non-profit-making organisation. The foundation’s highest body is the Council, whose decisions are implemented by the Board. Everyday activities are the responsibility of Heureka’s Director, Per-Edvin Persson, assisted by a management team and other staff.
