Water Weeks March 30 – April 10, 2026

Water connects natural phenomena, the environment, and everyday insights in an interesting way. Let's dive into the secrets of water together by doing, experimenting, and immersing ourselves.

The theme week program includes both guided activities that must be booked in advance and nonstop activities that groups can join according to their own schedule. The content supports the curricula of different age groups in a variety of ways and offers a phenomenon-based and experiential learning experience by the water.

Most of the activities are also available in English.

  • Through the eyes of a satellite: water phenomena

The nonstop activity station introduces visitors to the Earth's water and its phenomena through satellite images. The web-based Copernicus Browser is used to examine, for example, the algae situation in the Baltic Sea, glaciers, and desert irrigation areas. Students and children can explore how different water phenomena appear from space and how satellite observations can help us understand changes in the environment.

    Duration: 10–15 min.

  • The Journey of Water

In the Journey of Water presentation, an instructor guides participants through the water cycle on Earth and the different states of water at the exhibition Science on a Sphere. How does water change form as it travels from glaciers to the sea, from the sea to clouds, and from clouds to rain? Does more water come from somewhere, or is the amount of water on Earth always the same? Finally, we will choose a geographical area where water could fall and learn more about it.
The programme is available only in Finnish.

Duration ~20 min. Start times at 10, 11, and 12.

  • Virtual Water Quiz

In the Virtual Water Quiz we learn about the concept of water footprint and estimate the amount of water used to produce different products. Which uses more water to produce, wheat bread or rye bread? What about grapes or mangoes? Why should you choose potatoes over rice? You can explore these questions with a card game that can be played alone or with others. Challenge a friend to guess the water footprints of different foods and learn something new! The quiz is available only in Finnish.

    Duration ~5-10 min.

  • Miniature stream workshop

In the miniature stream workshop participants build a miniature world through which a real stream flows. The miniature world gets its water from a tank, and the water pressure also powers a water wheel built into the stream. The workshop teaches about environmental construction and how beauty is one of the most important features of the landscape. The programme is available only in Finnish.

    Duration: 10-15 min.
