Heureka's planetarium is undergoing the biggest transformation in its history. Opened in 1989 and last renovated almost 20 years ago, the interior and presentation technology of the planetarium will be renewed to meet today's expectations and standards. The project is being carried out in collaboration with the French planetarium supplier RSA Cosmos.
Heureka's planetarium, which opened in 1989, was a pioneer in planetarium technology in its day. The aim has been to maintain this later on, so in 2006–2007 the super cinema was converted into a digital planetarium. Now the planetarium will see an even bigger change, as the entire presentation technology will be renewed, including the projection dome. The project has received funding from the Ministry of Education and Culture in 2022.
" People are used to really high-quality presentation technology at home, in cinemas and at concerts. We want to offer Heureka's visitors impressive and immersive experiences that they will remember for a long time. This requires that in addition to the content presented in the planetarium, its technology and visitor experience are first-class. "

After the renovation, the public will be able to enjoy image quality with better resolution and light output compared to the previous planetarium system. The resolution of the renovated planetarium image will be over 10K. The number of pixels will increase by about six times compared to the previous 4K resolution. The image will be realized with 12 laser projectors. In addition, the renovated projection dome is visually seamless, so the immersion in the planetarium will be significantly better in the future. The light output will also take a huge step forward.
In addition to the imaging technology, the sound in the planetarium will be improved by moving from traditional 5.1-channel surround sound to modern surround sound using the Dolby Atmos speaker system. This means that there are speakers all around the dome, including at the top.
The renovation will also improve the accessibility of the space, with special attention paid to lighting and the placement of wheelchair spaces. In addition, the planetarium's stairs and walkways will be made more accessible. After the renovation, film screenings will be offered in four languages, in addition to headphones, using personal induction loops, and subtitles will be enabled using AR glasses.

The renewed planetarium's program
We will open the renovated planetarium with three films.
1) Asteroid Quest , which tells a fascinating story about how we study asteroids with probes. The film is a 10K version specially tailored for the Heureka's planetarium.
2) The Stellars - Mission: Green , which is a character animation aimed specifically at young audiences. The film explores what a forest needs to function. This film has also been tailored for Heureka's planetarium as a 10K version.
3) Recombination , a work by Dutch fractal artist Julius Horsthuis. The film immerses us in the fascinating world of fractals, accompanied by music. Recombination is shown in the evenings during extended opening hours and is aimed specifically at an older audience.
