• NOX Science Night 28.8. 6pm–11pm, with the theme of food and nutrition

    In the NOX science night (K18) 28.8.2026 6-11PM we delve into the theme food and nutrition. The event will feature lots of program related to the topic, from expert talks to workshops. Heureka's exhibitions will be open throughout the evening.

    Psst! The extremely popular Giants of the Ice Age exhibition will be open for the last day on Sunday, August 30th. The NOX science evening is therefore a great opportunity to experience what the Ice Age looks like at Heureka.

    Tickets €10. Also accessible with a Museum Card or Heureka Club card.

    Tickets are on sale until 28.8. 5PM or until the event is sold out.

    Food on the big screen – fact or fiction?


    What do movies really claim about food, eating, and nutrition? In Movie Corner, nutrition expert Patrik Borg selects delicious food scenes from well-known films and examines them through the lens of science: what is true, what is exaggerated, and what is sheer nonsense. Of course, Pulp Fiction is also included – because few hamburgers are as iconic as the Big Kahuna Burger.

    Can everyone learn to eat a varied diet? What to do when your diet is restricted because you perceive the tastes, textures, or other characteristics of food intensely? In this lecture, a food education expert will shed light on the multidimensionality of food perception and how practice makes perfect in diversifying one's diet.

    Different flavors of food

    The theme of the workshop is the basic tastes of food (sweetness, saltiness, bitterness, umami, etc.). After the theory part, you will be able to test whether you recognize the differences in tastes.

    The workshop is organized by the University of Turku.

    What does your diet look like during the workday? The workshop will discuss nutrition during the workday and its impact on alertness, work ability and coping in an inclusive and approachable way.

    Is coffee your kind of therapy? Come and order a coffee and you will receive your own custom coffee cup to take home. In the workshop you can choose a suitable text for your mug from the ready-made options and craft it to decorate your own mug. This way you will get a lasting memory of the NOX evening, which you can always remember while drinking your morning coffee!

    Would you like to taste a mineral? What is your favorite functional water?

    Come and experience what water tastes like when different minerals are added to it! In this workshop, you will mix and taste four different versions of water: 1) basic water, 2) mineral water, 3) sparkling water with minerals and 4) sparkling water without minerals. At the same time, you will learn how salts and minerals affect the taste and mouthfeel of water – and why even small changes make a surprisingly big difference. Beautiful gemstones also serve as visual and practical aids to help with mixing.

    This is how you eat according to nutritional recommendations – easily and effectively in everyday life

    Is it really difficult to follow nutritional recommendations or does it just seem that way? Come and find out in practice! This workshop will reveal researched information about healthy eating and, above all, what the recommendations look like in everyday life.

    We will make the nutritional recommendations concrete: what 500 g of vegetables means, where to get your daily whole grain and fiber, what are good sources of protein and fat, and how to stay within the recommendations regarding sugar, salt and hard fat.

    When you leave, you will know how to build a balanced diet that works for you in everyday life. Come and try out how small, smart food choices can promote your health and well-being.
