Synsepalum dulcificum

Have you heard of the miracle berry? It contains a glycoprotein called miraculin. What makes this berry special is that, after you eat it, foods that normally taste sour or tart taste sweet instead. What might an onion or a pickled cucumber taste like when your sense of taste has changed?

The berry’s effect on your sense of taste lasts for about 30 minutes to an hour. Please keep this in mind if you take part in the workshop!

Allergens: Dairy-free, gluten-free and nut-free.

7–11:30 pm. Location to be confirmed.

Do you have a predator’s instincts, or are you easy prey?

Did you know that, through evolution, 70% of people have developed the ability to taste poisons in plants? Around 30% of people lack this ability. In this workshop, you can find out which group you belong to. Do you have a predator’s instincts, or are you easy prey in need of protection?

  • Mom, there is a monster on my sofa!

I’ll sit down for an interview and talk about my lifelong love of cinema. I’ll open the doors to my creative laboratory and reveal how visual illusions and traditional special effects take shape in moulds and become monsters you can almost reach out and touch. So grab a drink, get ready for The Night of the Lizards and come listen in – it’s going to be a devilishly fascinating evening!

    Mr Lordi will be interviewed.

Schedule to be confirmed. On the Event Square stage.

  • Welcome to horror therapy

Horror is a poison that heals! Instead of fearing the news headlines, try worrying about the lizard under your bed. A horror writer shares his tips for finding the fun in fear.

Schedule to be confirmed. On the Event Square stage.

  • We will all die! WE WILL ALL DIE!

The history of life on Earth shows that Mother Nature is no warm and nurturing mum – she’s a full-blown psychobitch. If species don’t have the good sense to go extinct on their own, sooner or later they’ll be killed off in ways that only get nastier. And there’s no point looking to the heavens for someone to swoop in and save us: despite searching far and wide, we haven’t found another habitable planet in the universe. So should we Homo sapiens simply hum along with Leonard Cohen – “I have seen the future, it is murder” – and wait to join the trilobites and dinosaurs in the cosmos’s endless, bloody Halloween night?

Talk by Esko Valtaoja, Professor Emeritus of Space Astronomy at the University of Turku.

Schedule to be confirmed. On the Event Square stage.

  • Bloody fascinating – from dinosaurs to the treatments of the future

Few people realise how complex and individual the world hidden in our blood is. Blood cells, proteins in blood plasma and tiny packages that carry messages – extracellular vesicles – travel through our veins, carrying information and performing vital tasks every day. This talk takes us from dinosaur blood cells to your own unique blood, exploring blood donation, new treatments based on blood and the research that could lead to the treatments of the future.

Talk by Pia Siljander, Research Director at the Finnish Red Cross Blood Service and Adjunct Professor.

Schedule to be confirmed. On the Event Square stage.

  • Dinotorium

Talks in the auditorium. No food or drinks are allowed. Note! The talks are in Finnish.

  • Whose eggs, whose nest? A brief history of mating from T. rex to modern humans

Were dinosaurs faithful to their partners? Who cared for whose offspring? And what can biology and history tell us about ourselves? This talk explores different kinds of relationships, from strict monogamy to free love, among prehistoric animals and humans today. Join us on a journey through the history of mating and forming relationships!

Talk by Heikki Laine, sexual health counsellor.

Schedule to be confirmed. In the auditorium.

  • Dinosaurs and the natural world of the Mesozoic Era – what can their characteristics tell us about ancient changes in climate and the environment?

Dinosaurs have fascinated people for two centuries, and we already know a great deal about their diversity, appearance and adaptations. Yet major mysteries remain. What exactly did they eat? What kinds of environments and climates did they live in? And what can their characteristics tell us about conditions in different parts of the world during the Mesozoic Era?

In this talk, we’ll hear how wear on dinosaur teeth can reveal new information about their diets, and how the range of body sizes in ancient animal communities can offer clues to Mesozoic climates and environments.

Talk by Juha Saarinen, Associate Professor of Evolutionary Palaeontology at the University of Helsinki.

Schedule to be confirmed. In the auditorium.

  • Fearsome giants and cooing birds – the evolution of dinosaur diversity

The many shapes and forms of dinosaurs have fascinated people since the first fossils were discovered. Early depictions often showed them as lumbering giants or glaring monsters. Research now reveals a remarkable diversity behind their success. In this talk, we’ll dig through the Mesozoic Era to find out what recent discoveries tell us about our childhood favourites – and meet some previously unknown species that have since joined them.

Talk by Otto Stenberg, doctoral researcher and evolutionary biologist.

Schedule to be confirmed. In the auditorium.

  • Death Valley

  • Social death

So you went and told everyone you saw a living dinosaur at Heureka and tasted a sweet pickled cucumber? Time to prepare for social death.

In this workshop, you can get a certificate declaring you socially dead. You’ll also fill in a digital will created for the event, where you can consider, among other things, what should happen to your social media accounts when you’re gone.

  • What to you need to bury?

Is your ex still on your mind? Are you feeling anxious? Or do you just wish you could forget that awkward conversation with your neighbour in the lift? Don’t worry - come and bury your troubles in the Death Chute!

Write your worries on a piece of paper and place it in the urn at the workshop station. Once an hour, all the worries and pleas for absolution are sent down the Death Chute and destroyed.

  • Ask about death!

Do you have questions about death and the arrangements that follow? The experts from Mononen Funeral Home will be there throughout the evening to answer whatever is on your mind.

  • More workshops

Beware of the spy (in Finnish!)

Are you ready to infiltrate the Syndicate’s headquarters, armed only with your wits and the instructions coming through your earpiece?

Beware of the spy is a spy game played using wireless headphones, in which three rival teams compete for victory – secretly, silently and keeping a watchful eye on one another. You can never be sure who is really on your side. Instructions arrive directly through your earpiece, and you must make quick decisions on the ground without saying a word.

No preparation is needed, just jump right into the game. Put on your headphones. Who can you trust? Who is following you? And who will betray your trust? Listen carefully, stay alert and keep quiet.

Practical information:

  • Each session lasts approximately 45 minutes, including the introduction and wrap-up. The game itself lasts approximately 30 minutes.
  • The game is played in Finnish.
  • Each session accommodates up to 33 players.
