Archaeological excavations at Jokiniemi

Come along and learn the excavation technique of archaeological excavation in practice. With the permission of The Finnish Heritage Agency, we are investigating a richly-discovered 5500-year-old Stone Age settlement in Jokiniemi.

The course is organized in cooperation with the Helsinki Summer University.

The teachers of the course are FM Jan Fast and FM Janne Soisalo.

Introductory lecture

The introductory lecture will be held on Saturday 25.5. 12–14 at Heureka. You can attend the lecture on site or via remote connection.

The lecture tells about the prehistory of the Helsinki region. What was the habitat of animals thousands of years ago? What kind of traces have they left behind? The object of inspection is especially the old Stone Age settlement Jokiniemi in Vantaa.

The lecture is a public event free of charge and open to everyone. However, please register in advance!

  • Purpose and content

    You get to learn the excavation technique of archaeological excavation in practice.

    Participation does not require prior knowledge of archaeology. All excavation equipment can be found at the excavation site.

  • Price and additional information

    The course fee is €135.

    Children under the age of 14 can participate accompanied by an adult. In that case, register both yourself and your child for the course.

A lecture on the results of the excavations

The results of the excavations will be announced on Thursday 12.12. at 18–20 at Heureka. You can attend the lecture on site or via remote connection.

The lecture will tell you what was found in the excavations and what those discoveries tell about life in the Stone Age settlement of Jokiniemi. At the lecture, you can admire the excavation findings with your own hands.
